Engine and drive-system entries are copied from each TerraX model page. Where a page does not publish a drive system, the table says so; ask before assuming four-wheel drive. Model numbers are names, not specifications.

Start with the category: ATV, not side-by-side

Search results often mix ATVs and side-by-sides, but they are separate categories. In the TerraX catalogue, the AODES PATHCROSS family and the Benda Redstone family are listed as ATV, while AODES WORKCROSS and TRAILCROSS are listed as UTV. This page covers only the ATV listings; the side-by-side models have their own page.

Each row in the table links to the model page, which is where the category label, engine and drive system shown here were taken from. When two versions share a family name, treat them as separate vehicles and compare the pages one by one. A suffix such as S, L, BASE, PREMIUM, MUD PRO or R2 identifies a version; on its own it does not tell you what changed.

    Farm and work ATVs

On a farm, acreage or rural property, an ATV is usually asked to do short, repeated jobs: checking fences and livestock, reaching back fields, moving small tools or pulling a light implement. Write those jobs down, together with the surfaces you cross, such as gravel lanes, wet pasture, ruts or slopes, before you look at engines. That list is more useful than a horsepower figure when you compare models.

For work use, check each limit separately on the model page and in the manufacturer's operating information: rack loads, towing and any hitch or accessory you intend to use. Do not assume that a figure published for one version applies to another version in the same family. Benda's brand page describes the Redstone 550 as a "Versatile ATV for work and play", a reasonable starting point to compare against a PATHCROSS 550 or 650 for mixed property use.

    Hunting, trail and mud riding

For hunting access, woodlots and trail riding, think about where the ATV will be used rather than how fast it can go: narrow trails, soft ground, water crossings and the distance between your truck and the area you ride. Ask the landowner or trail operator about the rules that apply before you plan a route. Permission to ride on private land, on a club trail and on a public road are not interchangeable.

Two families in the table carry a mud designation. AODES lists the PATHCROSS 1000 S MUD PRO and 1000 L MUD PRO, and Benda lists the Redstone 1000 MUD, which its brand page describes as "Built for the toughest terrain". Compare those versions with the standard 1000-class models on their model pages, and ask what equipment differs on the version you are considering instead of relying on the name.

A first ATV: start with the rider

If you are buying a first ATV, start with the rider: experience, size and whether a passenger will ever ride along. Read the manufacturer's operating and age guidance for the exact model, whatever its engine size. In this range, the smallest engines listed are the 495cc single-cylinder PATHCROSS 550 versions and the 498.4cc Benda Redstone 550 versions.

A smaller engine is not a substitute for supervision or training, and a larger one is not automatically better for a beginner who mainly needs to cross a property. Check how comfortably the rider reaches the handlebars, controls and footrests, and bring those observations to the conversation about which version to order.

Engine size: how to read the displacement column

The table lists four AODES displacements and two Benda displacements, each copied from the model page: 495cc, 649cc, 800cc and 976cc for PATHCROSS, and 498.4cc and 997.1cc for Redstone. The model number is not the displacement; for example, the PATHCROSS 850 versions list an 800cc engine. Read the engine line rather than the badge.

Use the engine line to build a shortlist, not to make the final choice. Open the specification page for each version on your list, compare the figures that matter for your work, and ask TerraX to confirm any line the page does not publish.

    Drive system: 2WD, 4WD and 4WD lock

Every PATHCROSS page in the table lists the drive system as "Selectable 2WD-4WD-4WD Lock". Selectable means the rider chooses the mode. When to use each mode is a matter for the manufacturer's operating information for the exact model, so follow that rather than a general rule.

The Benda Redstone model pages listed here do not publish a drive-system line, so the table says so rather than guessing. If four-wheel drive or a locking mode matters for your work, ask TerraX to confirm the drive configuration of the exact Redstone version before you decide.

One rider or two-up: S and L versions

In the PATHCROSS range, the S and L suffixes mark different versions. On the model pages we checked, the S versions list a seating capacity of 1 and the L versions list 2, except the 550L BASE page, which does not publish a seating figure. Confirm the seating capacity on the page for the exact version you are considering.

Never carry a passenger on an ATV that is not designed for one. If a second rider is a regular requirement, also consider whether a side-by-side with bench or crew seating would suit the job better; that comparison is the next section.

ATV or UTV: when to choose which

An ATV suits one rider, or a rider and passenger on a two-up version, who needs to move around a property or trail on a compact machine. A side-by-side, or UTV, suits jobs where several people ride together, cargo goes in a bed, or the driver wants a seated, steering-wheel layout. Neither is better in general; the work decides.

If your list includes a work crew, a cab or regular bed loads, compare the AODES WORKCROSS and TRAILCROSS side-by-sides on the UTV page. If it is mostly one person, narrow trails and quick jobs around a property, stay with the ATVs on this page.

Riding in Ontario: what the province publishes

The Government of Ontario's page on driving an off-road vehicle says ORVs must be registered, display a licence plate (except in exempted areas like in far northern Ontario) and be insured under a motor vehicle liability policy. It also says drivers and passengers must wear an approved motorcycle helmet, securely fastened under the chin with a chin strap.

For riding on roads, the same page says the driver must be at least 16 years old and hold at least a valid G2 or M2 licence, and that ORVs cannot be driven on 400-series highways, or where there is no bylaw in place and the municipality is not listed in the provincial regulation. Check the current provincial page, your municipality and your insurer for the exact vehicle and route before you ride.

How to compare ATVs with TerraX

Shortlist two or three versions from the table, open each model page and note the engine, drive system, seating capacity and any load or towing figures that matter to you. Add the jobs, terrain, riders and transport plan. TerraX can discuss the AODES and Benda ranges from its Toronto location; use the request-a-quote button on this page with that list.

This category page is a selection guide. It does not confirm which versions are on hand or how a specific unit is equipped, so confirm the exact version and its Canadian configuration during your enquiry. A clear task list narrows the choice faster than a general ranking of ATVs.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an ATV and a UTV at TerraX?

TerraX lists AODES PATHCROSS and Benda Redstone as ATV, and AODES WORKCROSS and TRAILCROSS as UTV. This page covers the ATVs; side-by-sides have their own UTV page.

Which ATV engine sizes does TerraX list?

The model pages list 495cc, 649cc, 800cc and 976cc engines for AODES PATHCROSS, and 498.4cc and 997.1cc engines for Benda Redstone. Read the engine line on each page, because the model number is not the displacement.

Do PATHCROSS ATVs have selectable four-wheel drive?

Each PATHCROSS model page in the table lists the drive system as Selectable 2WD-4WD-4WD Lock. The Benda Redstone pages do not publish a drive-system line, so confirm it for the exact version.

Can I carry a passenger on an ATV?

Only on a version designed for one. On the PATHCROSS pages we checked, S versions list a seating capacity of 1 and L versions list 2, except the 550L BASE page, which lists no figure. Confirm it for the exact version.

How should I choose a farm ATV?

List the jobs, surfaces, slopes and any implement or trailer first. Then compare each exact version's engine, drive system and published load and towing information against that list.

Can I ride an ATV on Ontario roads?

Only where the rules allow it. Ontario's guidance says ORVs must be registered, plated (except in exempted areas) and insured, and that a road rider must be at least 16 years old with at least a G2 or M2 licence. Check the current rules, your municipality and your insurer.

Where can I ask about an ATV in Ontario?

Open the model page to identify the exact version, then use the request-a-quote button on this page with your intended work, riders and terrain. TerraX is located in Toronto.
