Canada's temperature swings — from +35°C summer highs to -40°C winter lows — put extraordinary stress on off-road vehicles. A disciplined maintenance routine protects your investment, prevents trail-side breakdowns, and keeps your UTV or ATV performing at its best year-round.
Spring: Post-Winter Inspection
After months of storage or winter riding, give your machine a thorough going-over before the first warm-weather ride:
- Battery: Charge fully and load-test. Replace if it cannot hold 12.6V at rest
- Fluids: Change engine oil and filter, check coolant level and condition, inspect brake fluid colour
- Tires: Inflate to spec, inspect sidewalls for cracking caused by cold-weather storage
- Brakes: Check pad thickness and rotor condition. Flush brake fluid if it has not been done in two years
- Suspension: Grease all zerks, inspect bushings for wear, and check shock absorbers for leaking oil
Summer: Peak Riding Season Care
High temperatures, dust, and heavy use demand attention to cooling and air filtration:
- Air filter: Clean or replace every 500 km in dusty conditions — a clogged filter robs power and increases fuel consumption
- Coolant: Verify the level before every ride. Overheating is the number-one cause of engine failure in summer
- CVT belt: Inspect for cracks, glazing, and width loss. A snapped belt ends your ride instantly
- Wash after mud rides: Mud packed into brake calipers, radiator fins, and suspension joints accelerates wear
Fall: Winterization Prep
Before temperatures drop, prepare your machine for cold-weather operation or long-term storage:
- Switch to winter-grade oil: 0W-40 or manufacturer-recommended cold-weather viscosity
- Top off fuel and add stabilizer: A full tank with fuel stabilizer prevents condensation and varnish buildup over winter
- Inspect and clean electrical connections: Corrosion on terminals causes no-start conditions in cold weather
- Test block heater (if equipped): Verify it heats the engine block to specification
Winter: Storage or Cold-Weather Riding
If storing for winter, use a battery tender, elevate the machine on jack stands to prevent flat spots on tires, and cover with a breathable tarp. If riding through winter:
- Allow a full 5-minute warm-up before loading the drivetrain
- Grease suspension and steering more frequently — cold forces grease out of joints
- Carry an emergency kit: tow strap, hand warmers, flashlight, and a charged phone
